Quake 4
Review of Quake 4 from id Software
This is a review of Quake 4 id Software brings us back to The Strogg infested
Lands and back into the fight forget failure it is not a option marine Kick butt or doom us all.
First off let me thank the folks at Level 3,id Software,Activision,Raven Software.
With out these folks we wouldn't have the game in the first place.
Test system specs:
- MSI Mainboard Model: Km4M-V
- AMD Athlon 1.8GHz
- 512Mb RAM
- 160Gb Maxtor hard drive
- LG DVD/CD-RW drive
- Logitech Premium USB Headset 350(axed they got broken)
- Steel Sound 5H headset(review pending)
Performance:
On this system it is pretty much smooth as butter.
Unlike my issues with Half Life 2 I can freaking play the game.
And play I did.
This game is more visually geared and you can tell it uses the Doom 3 Engine.
The feel of Doom 3 is there but tweaked to give it it's own feel and add to the game.
One aspect of this game with this engine tweaked from Doom 3 is that it is not all dark and gloomy
this hurt and added to the Doom 3 feel and look but really erked the players.
This game has a rich enviroment the colors are full even on this system.
Effects where great and intro movies added to the feel and all.
Audio is another great thing that must be right to add to all the effects and
this game has great audio.
The sound track, theme music and in game sound effects really pop when playing with a headset.
While I played with a usb headset it didn't hurt the feel of the game by lagging etc.
Online play :
What little I tried was quick and easy to connect to servers.
At the time I tried it there were only a few open to me but later on that week more where there.
I've found it to be great fun.
The online game play is great for thiose times you want the old run and gun.
What has become standard is in your choice of a LAN session is all there.
Screen Shots

OOOH that must have hurt eh?
Pros:
- Runs great, looks cool, and Lets you run at the
minimum level settings on an older PC like this one.
- Gets you in the game and make you love Quake all over again.
- Adds elements that other games have(half life opposing forces,Doom 3,etc) and
changes it to enhance the game feel and look
- Brings a clasic game to the front of the pack and shows you it still has game and is great
- Not over complicated to control for us arcade types
(Year Kung Fu Rocks)Year Kung Fu info thanks to KLOV/Coin-Op Museum)
Cons:
- None that I noticed unlike newer games that don't take older gamers and their older systems/hardware into thought this one everyone can run
Heck I might try to run it on a ATI rage 2 c (just kidding)
Conclusion
I feel anyone that like's first person shooters should have this game.
If you don't have it run not walk to the store and buy it you will not be sorry.
I look forward to another release in the Quake series and shall see you online when I can.
id Software show's us new tricks and give us the basics with out trying to expand in a new way and
messing up the feel ,look and play of this great classic.
They keep it simple and show us how a good frame/begining adds more then all that jazz.
After all the story, sound, feel and look should flow with the game thats what makes a great game thats fun to play .
