Saitek's Mark StarretCould you tell us about yourself and what you do at Saitek? I am the Product Marketing Manager for North America. I'm responsible for getting the messages out about our products, as well as being part of the team that develops new products. Who is the GM3200 Laser mouse for? The GM3200 is a performance mouse. This means it has extra features and better comfort and response than a normal mouse. Gamers, as well as digital artists, CAD professionals and anyone who uses and appreciates better quality and performance are our target consumers. With such a dpi set to 3200 isn't this overkill; I told a member of my team and he stated that that setting is too high unless you play at 2024x1600 or the like. There are two main aspects to dpi. One is the speed at which the cursor moves. The other is how fast it reacts to initial movement. Higher DPI will trigger movement detection sooner. How did you come to making this mouse (what gave your company the ideal, how long did it take to bring to market etc)? The concept started more than a year ago after extensive design team work, research and consumer research. What are you support options for users overseas etc and in Canada? Saitek maintains technical support by e-mail, telephone and user forums. What are your hours of tech support? Saitek technical support telephone hours are 8 AM to Midnight ET Monday through Friday, and 8 AM to 8 PM ET Saturday and Sunday at 310 972-9930. In addition, technical support can be e-mailed at support@saitekusa.com. We also offer a message board which can be accessed through the website. What kind of warranty is on this mouse? Saitek products are warranted for two year repair or replacement. How do you test them to make sure they are in great working order and for how long do you test? All our new products go through an extensive testing process including "torture testing" and test-to-failure of key components. Will you come out with a wireless version? Can't comment on that right now :) What are the care instructions for this mouse? There are no specific care instructions. Cleaning with a damp cloth, avoiding cleaners or excessive moisture are all that is required. Much like any consumer electronics product. What type of cord protection is used with this mouse? The cord is a standard mouse cable. It does have gold-plated contacts, for better transmission. Will the dpi be able to be changed via hardware or software only? It is in the mouse firmware, not controlled by PC software What about the programmable keys(software or hardware)? Programming is via software. It uses our Saitek Smart Technology(SST) software, so it will be able to do very complex commands and macros. What games and or apps would the 3200 dpi setting aid you in working with them? The speed benefits all First Person shooters, especially those with zoom and sniper modes. In addition, you should get added precision in PhotoShop and CAD programs. What are the colors that you can buy? Two designs, a blue, and a red/orange lava look design. Does this mouse have Linux drivers? Not at this time. Is this mouse a HID or a real mouse? Mouse What is the cord length? 2.5 Meters, with Velcro cable tie. Will you add other options to this mouse in further design updates like finger swiping devices etc? No comment at this time. What games do you play? Currently, I'm working my way through Far-Cry. I've finished FEAR and Half-Life II and am looking forward to the sequels. I'm also a flight sim fanatic, flying Pacific Fighters and Lock-On. I'm also into Silent Hunter III. A few others I can't comment on as well :) You can tell a lot about a company by what hardware it's employees use do you use your own products and if you do which ones and why? Absolutely. At home, I use an X52, Eclipse keyboard and PC Gaming Mouse. At the office, I use a gaming mouse, and am typing this on a Eclipse II. If you visited Saitek offices, you'd find we're gamers too. What operating systems are in house to test these mice and your other products? Primarily Windows 98, 2000, XP and now Vista. A few Macs. Where can we find out where to buy your products in Canada? We do not yet have specifics on retail availability for the new products in Canada other than through the Toumori Catalog which is currently being printed. But as always, end users (even in Canada) can purchase through the Saitek store at www.saitekusa.com. We will know more on Canadian distribution over the coming month. Never fear - we won't forget you ... we love our loyal Canadian customers :-)
