Interview with Ms.X of Girlz 0f DestructionWhat made you join up and start your love of gaming? I always played games, as long as I can remember...but it was always console like Mario games. I never had a computer growing up so I wasn't exposed to PC games until a few years ago when a friend from work showed me. How where you greeted when you first started out competing??? I was praised quite a bit which was really nice. It was my first LAN and I played in the tournament and won. I never expected it and was really happy with my results! Since then I started going to larger scale tournaments and have been excelling. How long did it take you to get a sponsor? We started as a team in 2001, and had our first sponsorship in 2004. I often get asked how to attain sponsorship...I really believe it's important to go to events live in person, meet people and take it from there. Do you build your systems or does your sponsors? The girls that live in the Home of Chrome are all equipped with computers in the house which were custom engraved and have the best hardware, including the S27 Chrome card. What operating system do you use to compete? In live competitions generally there is tournament computers provided, but we also have shuttle systems thanks to VIA which we can take with us while on the road. Why do you think there are not many girl gamers competing that are in the news? I think girl gaming is often in the news, because it is quite a difference to see females playing versus the general stereotype that all gamers are 'nerdy.' I think the media likes to see a difference as female players are quite rare but nonetheless, that stereotype is very wrong is what I've came to learn :-). It's great to see anything gaming related in the news, as it's an important step for E-Sports as a whole in order to progress as a serious sport. How do your male counter parts treat you after a loss? Most are fine with it, maybe they are impressed or maybe they are frustrated...every induvidual is different! For the most part, I think they are pleased to see females playing and being successful. What are the pluses and minuses of being a sponsored gaming clan? There is definitely no cons as far as sponsorship is concerned. Without that, it is very hard to play computer games as a profession as travelling the world is definitely not cheap or affordable. Without the sponsors that contribute to the community there would be no such thing as E-Sports. No prize money, no financial support to make it to events. They really are the people that make it happen for us. Will you be at Quakecon? Yes definitely, Quakecon is my favorite event of the year! I have been going since 2003 and plan to go to every year in the future. If theres one thing you would like to tell your fellow gamers If you build it...he will come Why? Well I suppose with any other case in life, if you try really hard to make something happen it can. I did a lot for my team because I felt we had potential and after years it is definitely paying off now. If you feel that you really want it, then you need to go for it! What would you tell a young lady/women/girl thats interested in gaming When I first started with PC games I was so amazed, and when I started to learn about the professional end I was even more intrigued. Starting off at local events is the best way, and then progress from there. It's a good way to get practice and learn more about the environment of competitive play on LAN. What new products would you like to see in the gaming market? Personal waterboys for rent! :P Would you use Linux Nope! Have you tried Vista beta yet? No, but would like to What tips would you give gamers that use the chrome series cards(tweaks, tips, etc(with out giving away too much)? I don't tweak, I'm not much of a hardware guru in that aspect. The chrome card gives me what I need to run Quake4 properly and I believe this is a great card especially for those who cannot afford to spend tons of money on a graphics card. What are your current games you play in your down time? Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Enemy Territory, Unreal Tournament, Warsow :) How long do you all train for a tournament? It can depend on the calibur of the tournament...could be anywhere from 2-8 hours per day! How is the new home in Sweden and what are the things you miss from home? I enjoy living here, it's great to be able to take advantage of the great Swedish internet connections and play with the top players from here. It's a big difference from the westcoast of Canada, where there's not many people playing. Of course I miss friends and family but, everyone moves on and they have too :) What do you love about being a pro team? The travel and experiences which I never would have had otherwise What sucks at times? Honestly..nothing ;). It is a very hectic schedule which some may not enjoy, but for me I live for it! I do worry however, about when it all ends, which of course it will at some point....I think I will feel like I've just woken from a dream and will be very lost with what to do with myself. With all the tours etc how is the love life It's living a dream, it really is. At first my friends back home thought it was pretty dorky and so forth...and now they are quite jealous :P How do you all deal with the stress when in tournament mode? I do my best...nerves can really get the best of you sometimes, but in order to preform good you really must try to put that aside as best as possible. With that we end this interview; Thank you ! ![]() |
