Interview with AMD

“I would like to thank Teresa de Onis, Desktop product manager, AMD for the opportunity for this interview.  An with that lets get on with the show.”

Why did AMD have to go with a new socket type for ddr2 support?

“As a customer-centric company, AMD believes in delivering technologies that benefit partners and end users. This transition is designed to enable performance enhancements and next-generation platform innovations such as virtualization and security features along with high-performance, unbuffered DDR2 memory.”

What will be the benefit of going to the new socket besides ddr2 support?

“As a customer-centric company, AMD believes in delivering technologies that benefit partners and end users. This transition is designed to enable performance enhancements and next-generation platform innovations such as virtualization and security features along with high-performance, unbuffered DDR2 memory.”

What will AMD add to the chip set that it couldn't put in to the 939 CPU's?

“ AMD processors based on Socket M2 will boost a number of next-generation platform innovations including: · Virtualization and Security – first implementation to support Microsoft’s security and virtualization initiative expected to be launched in Microsoft’s Windows Vista OS · Bi-directional PROCHOT – an external device can initiate thermal throttling · Single Core and dual-core - updates will be produced for both single and dual-core processor designs · DDR2 Technology – includes support for up to DDR2-667”

Will Opteron cpu's be moved over to the new socket as well?

“The Opteron will move to next generation sockets mid-year. The AMD Opteron processors 200 and 800 Series will move to Socket F. The AMD Opteron processors 100 Series will use Socket AM2. An important note, regarding stability, is this is the first socket change since the launch of the AMD Opteron processor in 2003.”

How long does AMD see the Socket M platform being in use?

“AMD plans to introduce Socket AM2-based processors with future processor model introductions, but Socket AM2 will not be limited to only new product introductions. AMD expects that several existing processors will also transition to Socket AM2, including the highest performing AMD Athlon™ 64 and AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core processors. ”

Will there be a Sempron like line of socket M cpu's?

“ AMD plans to simultaneously move to the Socket AM2 for all its desktop processors, from the performance and mainstream segments to the value segment, in mid-2006.”
